High Brown Fritillary - 50 ova placed in dried leaf litter and left outside in a netted cage. Brought into a cold greenhouse as temperature rises 15th Feb
Overwintered Black Veined White emerged from hibernation 18th March - or did they? There was a web on the hawthorn but no larvae emerged from this so it looks like they didn’t survive the winter.
Emperor Moth cocoons - received 2nd Feb 10 placed out ready for emergence. May be a little early?
Kentish Glory - placed in emerging cage 15th Feb - two males emerged on 20th Feb. No other moths emerged and now one of the males has died. Doesn’t look like any more will emerge now.
Marsh Fritillary - hundreds of small larvae woke from hibernation and brought into cold greenhouse with fresh plants of devils bit scabious. Started to eat too much so switched to honeysuckle and set 24 devils bit scabious plants for later.
Glanville Fritillary - 30 larvae bought and placed in cold greenhouse with plantain.
Chequered Blue pupae reserved for end March - arrived on 31st March and laid out for emergence
Black Veined White larvae reserved for later
Brown Hairstreak ova purchased - 30 - 32 received
African Golden Emperor moth larvae purchased - 10 received 11 but 1 dead. Seemed to be going through skin change and ended up with only 3 left but now feeding on laurel picked from down the road.
Madagascan Bullseye moth - several cocoons from last year ready for emergence
Large Copper pupae which didn’t hatch last year kept just in case!
Emperor moths started emergence today (22nd March) - 2 adults emerged followed by 6 females - one pairing but the males were too old by the time the females emerged! 29th March - last 2 emergences both males and pairing almost immediately! Plenty of eggs laid now ready for sale when larvae hatch. Larvae now hatching (16th April)
New ELG list - ordered 20 High Brown larvae and 10 garden tiger pupae - aim is to breed fritillary to adult and release and breed tiger with a view to seeing the young larvae.
HB Fritillary arrived 7th April along with Black Veined White originally reserved earlier in March.
Ordered Large Copper - determined to have one last try with this species! 20 larvae arrived 16th April and put in a netted cage outside with dock.
